Therapeutic Massage and it’s Benefits

The Therapeutic benefits of massage

By: Sarah Amelia Foster, Licensed Massage Therapist

Massage is often thought of as a relaxing treat, only to be taken advantage of once in a while, and when funds are in excess. Fluffy, expensive, and oily, a spa massage may not be the most beneficial or practical way to treat yourself to body work, albeit a nice, relaxing way to pamper yourself and satisfy the urge for an occasional spa treatment.

Receiving regularly scheduled, customized massage has some outstanding benefits. Furthermore, there are many different styles of massage. A well trained, licensed massage therapist will be knowledgeable in several different modalities, and can use them to tailor a massage to their client’s every need.

Some of the most common modalities include:

Swedish: Good for circulation and general relaxation of the entire body. This is the most common form of “spa” massage which uses heavy amounts of oil or lotion for lubrication or “glide”. Pressure can vary from light to deep, depending on client’s preference, and all strokes are done moving towards the heart which is also used as warm up for other massage techniques.

Neuromuscular Therapy or Trigger Point Release: Trigger points are the technical term for what most people refer to as knots. This modality uses moderate to deep pressure to treat knots, repetitive motion injury (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), and areas of chronic tension due to past injury, surgery, posture problems, or musculoskeletal conditions like TMJ dysfunction.

Deep Tissue: Usually focuses on just one or two areas of the body. This is a very vigorous, deep massage. Very little lubrication is used. Deep tissue is good for chronic tension due to stress, emotional trauma, or repetitive motion injury. It can be painful and uncomfortable, causing bruising, and emotional release. It is an extremely popular form of massage.

Sports Massage: Can be used before athletic events to enhance performance, or after events to assist with recovery. Sports massage between events utilizes deep tissue and trigger point release to assist training. Uses deep to moderate pressure, and is applied at a vigorous pace.

Lymph Drainage: An extremely slow, light, feather touch to aid the body in recovery from illness, injury, and edema. The light touch follows the pathways of the lymph vessels through the body to flush out toxins.

Myofascial Release: Uses no lubricant. Is designed to release layers of fascia (connective tissue between and surrounding the muscles) to alleviate tension. Speeds warm-up and relaxation of tissues. Uses very slow to no movement.

Using these massage modalities (and maybe more!) a massage therapist can custom tailor a massage to fit a client’s every needs.

Whether you spend your work day hunching over a computer, spend your weekends running marathons, have past injuries that still like to pop up and bother you now and then, have terrible posture, or more…. A regular massage schedule will help you with almost any of your physical needs.

The benefits of massage include:

  • Stress relief
  • Aids in relaxation
  • Promotes deeper breathing
  • Relieves chronic tension
  • Improves circulation of blood, lymph, and other bodily fluids
  • Alleviation of discomfort during pregnancy
  • Fosters faster healing of strained muscles & sprained ligaments
  • Reduces pain and swelling
  • Reduces formation of scar tissue after injury or surgery
  • Alleviates muscle cramping and spasm
  • Provides greater joint mobility and range of motion
  • Enhances athletic performance
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Relieves headaches, migraines, and eye strain
  • Enhances the health of skin
  • Improves posture
  • Treats musculoskeletal problems
  • Rehabilitative after injury or surgery

When receiving your first therapeutic massage, you and the therapist will decide which modalities will be most beneficial.

Before your first session, inform the therapist of any diseases, conditions, or problems you have. Some things are contraindicated for massage like acute (recent) injury, certain types of cancers, or skin conditions. A massage therapist may want a note from your doctor for permission to work with certain medical conditions. Be sure your therapist is informed of ALL medical conditions, current and pre-existing, to avoid complications or injury. Keep all lines of communication with your therapist open. By not telling the therapist a particular massage stroke is painful or uncomfortable, you are not allowing yourself to have the most beneficial session possible.

Therapeutic massages are most beneficial when received at least once a month. Some people may need to have them as often as once a week to achieve their ideal outcome. Any more than once a week is too much, the body needs time to recover after a massage, just like after vigorous exercise and stretching. The therapist may also suggest homework for a client to do between massages to maintain or assist in correction of the condition(s) that is being treated. Homework may include certain exercises, stretches, or changes in lifestyle. Please remember a massage therapist is NOT a doctor, and while they may make suggestions to help you live a healthier lifestyle and increase your wellbeing, they are NOT allowed to diagnose conditions, treat illness, or prescribe medications.

Electrolysis, How it works

Electrolysis: What is it and How does it work?

Unwanted hair is one of the most annoying and embarrassing things there is.  Anything from those pesky chin hairs, those annoying hairs on the corners of your lip, uncontrollable eyebrow hairs, or ingrown, painful hairs on the chin, neck, underarms or bikini.

Electrolysis is the only method approved by the FDA for PERMENANT HAIR REMOVAL.  Electrolysis can be performed any hair color, including blond hair, red hair and white or gray hair.  Electrolysis can also be performed on any skin color, fair skin, tanned skin or dark skin.  Electrolysis can also be performed on any area of the face or body: eyebrows, ears, chin, lip, nose, cheeks, all body areas, underarms, bikini, ab trail, chest, back, shoulders, arms, hands, toes and more.

There is no need to try to endure and “take care” of you unwanted hair yourself.  Electrolysis works, it is permanent and affordable.  No more embarrassing moments thinking that others have noticed your chin hair or red, bumpy ingrown hairs on your chin, neck, ab, bikini or underarms.

How does electrolysis work?  Well, electrolysis is the first method of hair removal invented, back in 1875.  What a professional electrologist will do is evaluate your skin type, your hair, what methods of removal you have been doing, like tweezing, waxing, shaving, trimming or bleaching.  We than use a small probe that looks like a needle and insert the probe along side the hair into the follicle.  You do not feel this because the follicle is already an opening in the skin.  Then we use a very small amount of current to damage the follicle.  The goal it to damage the lower 2/3 rds of the follicle enough so that it will not grow a new hair.  This process can take anywhere from one treatment per follicle to several treatments per follicle.  The factors involved are:  How strong are the hairs, what have you been doing to those hairs (if you have been tweezing or waxing facial hair, they will likely be stronger and more difficult to remove), how sensitive are you (the process is uncomfortable.  I compare it to tweezing a hair.  If you tweeze a hair from your chin it hurts a little, but if you tweeze a hair from under your nose your eyes start to water, you may even sneeze.  So where we are working affects our settings.  Also, how sensitive is your skin.  Many time a client may have more sensitive skin than they think.  We watch you skin closely and if it reacts too fast we may need to turn the settings down. Because of all these factors it may be difficult to tell you exactly how long  or how many treatments you will need.  But be assured we always get permanent results.

There are some additional things to consider that may be contributing to your hair growth.  Certain health conditions such as PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome), thyroid problems, other hormonal issues like puberty, pregnancy and menopause.  There are also medications that can cause unwanted hair growth.  We need to take everything into consideration before we can come up with a treatment plan that will work for each individual.

Ultimately we want you to finish with your hair removal and get to the point where you don’t need to see us anymore for electrolysis.  Then you can start coming in for “fun” things like facials, massage, skincare, lashes or other fun things.

Remember that Electrolysis is the ONLY FDA APPROVED METHOD FOR PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL.

1.        Galvanic or electrolysis is a chemical process. The current produces a chemical reaction in the hair follicle eliminating the hair growth cells. This method is widely used in the multiple needle galvanic electrolysis, utilizing up to 16 needles simultaneously.  This is the preferred method for coarse body hair.

2.        Thermolysis or short-wave produces heat. When this modality is used it heats and destroys the hair growth cells in the follicle. This modality can be utilized in two ways: (1) flash method of thermolysis uses high intensity current for less time in the follicle (2) the current is used at lower intensity and longer timing.

3.        The blend method combines galvanic current with thermolysis current. Thermolysis heats up the chemical reaction in the follicle destroying hair growth cells.  This is the preferred method for facial hair.

Do away with unwanted hair, permanently!

Do away with Unwanted Hair, PERANENTLY!

Our Professional Electrologists

Unwanted hair is one of the most annoying things out there. There are so many methods in doing away with the unwanted patches and strays. Waxing is the most popular form of hair removal. For the most part, everyone has had it done. It usually doesn’t even take very long, a few minutes and the hair is gone. The drawback with waxing is the hair keeps on coming back!

What bout Laser hair removal? Laser hair removal is considered to be hair ‘reduction’ rather than ‘permanent’ hair removal. This method can be used on anyone but works best on light-skinned, dark-haired individuals. Although you may see some good results, the long-term safety of the patient’s skin and health have yet to be evaluated.

How about Electrolysis? Electrolysis is the only true form of ‘permanent’ hair removal.  This method essentially involves sending small amounts of electricity into the hair follicle to stop the hair growth leaving you with smooth, sleek healthy looking skin.  No other solution claims such universal acceptability and success. This method works well on a variety of skin and hair types and can be used on a variety of areas on the face and body. You will work with your electrologist to create a treatment plan that works well with you and your schedule. Each electrologist must successfully pass comprehensive national testing in order to be certified but it doesn’t stop there. They must continue to maintain their education in order to maintain CPE (Certified Professional Electrologist) status.

Laser vs Electrolysis

One of the most commonly asked questions we get at the office is, “What is the difference between Laser and Electrolysis?” So, we’ve decided to provide a brief answer for all those who are wondering about this. Laser and Electrolysis are both forms of hair removal. Despite what most laser technicians will advertise or tell you, Laser is NOT permanent hair removal. That title is reserved only for electrolysis. Laser can only legally be considered ‘permanent hair reduction’; whereas electrolysis can legally be advertised as “permanent hair removal’. But does that mean Laser is worthless? Well no. Both Laser and Electrolysis are helpful and effective at helping to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair growth. So how does a person decide which is right for them? Lets look a little closer at each to help you make that choice.

First, we’ll discuss Laser. In general, Laser uses light frequencies to damage the “hair growing apparatus” called the Dermal Papilla within the skin. While many lasers are now licensed for use on people of all skin colors, Laser is best suited for people with very light skin AND very dark hair. Because the laser is “attracted” to pigments, individuals with light skin and dark hair will typically enjoy faster results because most of the laser energy will be absorbed by the pigment in the hair bulb. Individuals with dark skin and light or dark hair OR light skin with light hair typically don’t see very good results. Most clients report a small to moderate amount of pain upon treatment. Usually Laser technicians will suggest a series of about six treatments spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Then a schedule of maintenance is usually necessary to keep the remaining hair at bay. Laser is priced by the area. Typically Laser is better than electrolysis for large areas including legs, arms, and back.

Secondly, let’s look at the different forms of Electrolysis. The most effective form of Electrolysis is called the Blend Method. It uses two types of electricity to create permanent results. The first type, called Thermolysis, uses electricity to create heat. This enhances the function of the second modality called Galvanic Current, or True Electrolysis. This is the modality that produces permanent results by means of a chemical reaction involving the water and sodium content in the skin. The Blend uses both modalities simultaneously by means of a small, sterile wire that is painlessly inserted into the hair follicle. The electricity is applied for 2-10 seconds and then the wire is removed. The technician will remove the hair from the treated follicle. Generally a series of treatments is required to achieve permanent results, but improvement should be seen with each treatment. Electrolysis is effective for use on all hair types/colors and skin colors. Results depend on frequency of treatments as well as the setting a person can tolerate. Most clients report mild to moderate discomfort upon treatment. Electrolysis is effective for all body areas but particularly for smaller areas such as lip, chin, and brows.

Electrolysis is for Everyone

Electrolysis is for Everyone

Why should I choose electrolysis over other temporary methods like laser and waxing?

Unlike other hair removal options, professionally performed electrolysis eliminates unwanted hair, permanently, with unsurpassed results.  Moreover, it does so for the largest variety of skin and hair types.

Laser promoters compare laser to electrolysis although laser assisted hair removal is considered a temporary method. It has not been evaluated for long-term safety of the patient’s skin and health.

Waxing, threading and tweezing are alike. However, ingrown hairs and discoloration may result. Additionally, they may cause an increase in hair growth activity. Depilatories and Shaving can cause an irritation to the skin while the hair regrows quickly. These methods can require a lifetime of maintenance. Many can appear inexpensive but cost more due to long term use and are found to be inconvenient.

Electrolysis works on most areas of the body to give you smooth, sleek healthy looking skin.  No other solution claims such universal acceptability and success.

Electrolysis works on all skin and hair types   It can be applied to most facial and body parts, including: eyebrows, chin, upper & lower lip, jaw line & sides of the face, breast & underarms, abdomen, bikini line, legs and back. Based on a personal and confidential consultation, your electrologist will design a treatment plan that addresses your specific hair removal needs.

Immediately following treatment, there may be slight redness, which varies with each individual. The latest technology has made electrolysis more comfortable and effective than ever before. Your electrologist will provide you with post treatment instructions and the personal attention you need. You are assured of the best care from a skilled hair removal professional.

The American Electrology Association has established specific standards for the profession including a national board certification credential, Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). This designation indicates that the electrologist has successfully passed comprehensive national testing. Once awarded the CPE credential, the electrologist must fulfill continuing education requirements or be retested in order to maintain the prestigious CPE status.

These and more questions are answered on the AEA website as well as ArvadaSkinSalon website.

ArvadaSkinSalon offers a FREE consultation and all Electrologists are certified through the AEA with the CPE certification.  Call now for your FREE and confidential consultation 303.421.1106

Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash Extensions

One sure way to amplify your personal glamour this summer is by adding long, lustrous lashes. Suddenly every glance or flirtatious stare becomes more dramatic and effective, and eyes look bigger, and younger.

Eyelash Extensions bring the effortless joy of never needing to apply mascara.  They also ensure that you never wake up in the morning or emerge from a shower, pool or ocean looking washed out and tired. The next time you’re caught off guard by a surprise encounter, rather than staring at the ground because you feel like an unmade bed, look up and flash a flirty flutter.

Lashes come in a range of lengths, and colors, with different degrees of curl.  As a rule, larger features can support longer lashes, but length and degree of curl are a matter of personal preference—dramatic vs. more natural.  The professionally trained Eyelash Extension Experts at ArvadaSkinSalon consult with each client to find out your desired look, your lifestyle, schedule and will have recommendations for you.  We also offer one free touch up after the first application within a week.  Just to make sure you are satisfied with your new beautiful look.

Men are getting into the look of lash extensions too.  For men, we use short thick lashes and it looks completely natural.  This is a more youthful and attractive look for men.

NovaLash Eyelash Extensions are the top lash extensions in the US.  They are particularly strong and flexible.  The Glue that NovaLash uses physician-developed, medical grade adhesives.  This means no exposure to contaminants and does not contain any detectable formaldehyde.  They use the best adhesive available on the market.

When properly applied, using Platinum Bond Adhesive, NovaLash lash extensions can be worn throughout the year with minimal monthly maintenance.  Touch-ups are recommended after the initial full set application to refill any lashes that have cycled out.  To maintain the full, thick appearance of a new set of lashes a visit to your lash professional is recommended every 4 weeks based on your own natural lash growth cycle.  Dermalogica makeup remover is recommended for use at home.  This product will not degrade the glue and your lashes will last longer.

Just imagine looking glamorous all year long, every day of the week, with no need to apply mascara.  Call now for your engagement with one of our professionally trained Eyelash Extension Experts at ArvadaSkinSalon 303.421.1106

Summer Skin Care

Greetings!
As the days grow increasingly hotter, we should always be thinking about protecting ourselves from the suns harmful rays and keeping our skin looking great! I’d like to share some tips for having healthy, summertime skin. Enjoy!
~ Collene

One of the most common ways to protect from the sun’s harmful rays is by applying sunscreen. While some sun may help in shaking off the wintertime blues and be beneficial for Vitamin D; too much sun exposure can cause serious skin damage. The sun’s UV rays can begin to cause damage to your skin in as little as 15 minutes. Make sure to apply a solid layer on all exposed skin and don’t be fooled, sunscreen should be worn even on slightly cloudy or cool days. Most sunscreens work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering sunlight. Don’t forget to reapply after 2 hours of wear, after swimming or any activity that makes you sweat. Also, make sure to keep an eye on the expiration date. If there is no expiration date the max shelf life is 3 years. If exposed to high heat the shelf life decreases.
The F.D.A. just released some new information regarding the regulating of sunscreen. In order claim “broad spectrum” protection the sunscreen must protect equally again UVB, which causes burning, and UVA rays, which cause wrinkles. Both these harmful rays cause cancer. These new regulations will also cause manufactures to change their claims that their sunscreen is water or sweat proof but rather give a time frame in which the product is water or sweat resistant. Also, only sunscreen that has SPF of 15 or higher will be allowed to maintain that they help prevent sunburn, reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature signs of skin aging. These new regulations will take effect in a year but don’t wait until then to start using sunscreen to protect your skin and keep it healthy.
We recommend Dermalogica’s Daylight Defense line. Dermalogica realizes that sunscreen along with antioxidant vitamins provides the maximum free radical protection. With that knowledge, “Dermalogica products feature UV Smart Booster Technology, a customized microcapsule that safeguards active vitamins, then bursts open upon contact with UV rays, releasing an active ingredient complex of Vitamin C and Vitamin E.” The combination of the antioxidant vitamins and the sunscreen provides maximum protection reducing the need for extra potentially-irritating sunscreen ingredients making them less chalky and less greasy.
Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you choose a product that is just right for your skin type.

How to Treat Acne and Pimples

How to Treat Acne and Pimples

Do you suffer from ACNE or frequent BREAKOUTS and PIMPLES?  Most people have had to deal with acne and breakouts at some point in their life.  If you are dealing with it right now, what is the best way to treat this problem.  Acne and breakouts affect teens as well as adults, and the treatment is often different for each.

Teens often suffer from acne and breakout because of hormonal changes, diet, activities and even work environments like food service.  Gentle cleansing with a mild cleanser that contains salicylic acid twice a day along with a moisturizer for oily or acne skin.  Spot treatments for blemishes is also something to have on hand.  Spot treatments should contain salicylic acid, sulfur, and/or benzyl peroxide.  Regular Acne Facials as well as IPL (light therapy) will benefit acne.  Isolaz Acne Treatment is the only FDA approved light therapy treatment for all types of acne and pimples.

Adult acne is often hard to treat.  Most adults who suffer from frequent breakouts or acne “have tried everything”. As with teens, a mild cleanser only twice a day is recommended along with a moisturizers that contain ingredients to help stabilize the sebaceous gland (oil gland) and other ingredients to help smooth skin and treat the blemishes.  Professional treatments on a regular basis that include IPL, Acne Facials, and hydration (HydraFacial) are necessary to achieve and maintain healthy skin.

Recommendations:
     Acne Facials
     Isolaz Acne Treatment (IPL)
     HydraFacial
     Professional products for home use
